A Yankees fan walks into a bar in Nashua. Gets into a beef with a chowderhead over their respective teams. The chowderhead appeals to his fellow New England lowlifes to join in and abuse the Yankeegirl verbally. When they leave the bar she runs over him with her car, killing him. I don't want to say serves him right....
but I still feel a helluva lot worse for the horse.

Given the state of things in the sports and other media, I'm surprised this story hasn't gotten more play--even here in Boston it's been pretty muted. It's about people getting drunk and acting stupid, and it's about baseball; and being that those things are a pretty good snapshot of life in Boston, I'd have expected much more local interest.
As for the team, I have to repeat my earlier sentiment that I'm most interested in the consistent mediocrity. It holds out hope that it keeps the team scrappy, say, like the '03 Marlins or '06 Cards--keep fighting to stay above .500 until September, then go on a run to grabe the wildcard and head into October with gritty momentum.
However, I don't think the AL is really set up that way. It's harder to pull that off with all the talent in this league.
But if the Yankees finish at 80 some wins this year, it wouldn;t be the worst thing, as long as by September Hughes and Kennedy have gotten up to major league levels again. Then next year we start again sans Giambi and some possibilities open up.
But one question I have for Joe V: sorry if you've already addressed this--I haven't seen all the posts yet:
What are your views, now with hindsight, on not trading for Santanna?

I give my take on Santana in the new post entitiled the Yankees suck. They'll be clearing not just Giambi, but Mussina, Abreu, Pettite, and maybe Damon.
